As the commercial real estate profession evolves, so does the need to cultivate the next generation of professionals who will shape its future. The 2026 University Valuation Case Challenge, hosted by the Appraisal Institute, represents a meaningful step forward in that effort. Valbridge Property Advisors is proud to play a leading role as both a corporate sponsor and a driving force behind the program’s development.

The Case Challenge brings together top undergraduate talent from across the country to engage in a hands-on, real-world valuation experience. This year, 21 university teams submitted entries, with the top 16 selected to compete live at the Appraisal Institute’s Annual Conference in Nashville. Each team, composed of four students and a faculty advisor, is tasked with analyzing an actual development site in Memphis.

Participants are asked to think like real estate professionals. Over the course of one week, teams develop a full investment narrative that includes highest and best use analysis, valuation, design considerations, construction assumptions, and financing strategy. While students are accompanied by a faculty advisor, they develop their opinions on their own. Final deliverables include a concise investment presentation and a one-page deal summary, mirroring what would be presented to an equity investor.

Finalists will present their work in person to a panel of industry judges, with 20 minutes for presentation followed by a live Q&A. The competition culminates in a final round where top teams compete for recognition and prizes, including a $5,000 grand prize.

A Valbridge-Led Initiative

The Case Challenge builds on the Appraisal Institute’s broader University Initiative, which aims to expand awareness of valuation as a career path and strengthen ties between academia and industry. Valbridge has been deeply involved from the beginning.

Richard Wolf, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, CRE, Senior Managing Director of Valbridge Property Advisors | Philadelphia, originated the concept for the Case Challenge as a way to bring valuation to life for students.

“This is about growing the next generation,” Wolf explains. “Not every student will become an appraiser, but many will go on to become investors, developers, and decision-makers. We are helping them understand the value of credible valuation and planting seeds for future demand.”

Valbridge’s involvement extends well beyond sponsorship. CEO Jody Bishop III, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, Karl Finkelstein, MAI, and Kari Campbell, MAI are serving as live judges alongside more than 50 industry professionals. In addition, Jason Roos, MAI, Tyler Siegworth, MAI, and Daniel Kann, MAI helped with the initial round of virtual judging. Michele Wood also supported our team’s development and involvement in the program. We are deeply grateful to our colleagues for volunteering their time and expertise to this program.

Building Industry Awareness and Opportunity

Programs like the Case Challenge serve multiple purposes. They introduce students to the complexity and importance of valuation, provide hands-on experience with real assets, and create meaningful connections between students and industry leaders.

They also reflect a broader commitment shared by Valbridge Property Advisors and the Appraisal Institute to invest in education, mentorship, and long-term industry sustainability.

By engaging students early, the program helps ensure that future professionals, whether they become appraisers or clients of appraisal services, have a strong foundation in valuation principles.

Continuing the Momentum

The energy surrounding the 2026 Case Challenge underscores the growing interest in experiential learning within commercial real estate education. As the program continues to expand, Valbridge remains committed to supporting initiatives that elevate the profession and strengthen its future.

We look forward to seeing the innovative ideas these students bring forward and to continuing our role in shaping the next generation of valuation professionals.
